Pictures reveal Brittany Higgins’ new fiance covered the inside of Australia’s best-known lighthouse with rose petals and candles for their romantic proposal.

David Shiraz, 29, popped the question to the former Liberal Party staffer on top of the Byron Bay lighthouse at sunset on Saturday.

Ms Higgins, 28, arrived at the memorial accompanied by a close friend, wearing a black cocktail dress and sand-colored heels as she walked up the flight of stairs dotted with photos of the couple in happy times.

At the top, the waiting Mr. Shiraz lifted Mrs. Higgins up with a bouquet of red roses as he knelt down and handed her a sparkling diamond ring.

Ms Higgin accepted and the couple sealed their engagement with a passionate kiss as the former press gallery journalist who now works at Southern Cross Austereo stood up.

The Byron Bay Lighthouse is famous for being located at the easternmost point of Australia, where it receives some of the first rays of the sun at dawn and spectacular sunsets in the evening.

Mr. Shiraz, dressed in a smart cream blazer and jeans, walked down the steps with his bride-to-be, while waiting friends and family congratulated them.

The gang then traveled to Byron Bay, where they uncorked the champagne and celebrated the New Year with a large group.

The engagement marks a new beginning for Ms Higgins, who just two weeks ago reached a confidential settlement with the Commonwealth over claims that a colleague sexually assaulted her at Parliament House in 2019.

“So lucky to spend my whole life with you,” she wrote alongside a photo of the proposal on Instagram.

Attorney Noor Blumer, representing Ms. Higgins, issued a brief statement at the time.

“In a mediation held today, the Commonwealth and Ms Higgins have settled their claims,” Ms Blumer said.

“At the request of Ms. Higgins, the parties have agreed that the terms of the agreement are confidential,” it said.

In early December, Ms. Higgins’ civil action named three defendants: Senators Linda Reynolds and Michaelia Cash, as well as the Commonwealth. Since then, Senator Reynolds is believed to have been removed from the claim.

The documents set out Ms Higgins’ intent to sue for sexual harassment, sex discrimination, disability discrimination, neglect and victimization stemming from her claims that she was raped by another staff member inside Parliament House and the subsequent consequences.

At the time, the claim was expected to be worth about $3 million, including $2.5 million for future economic losses, past economic losses of about $100,000, and general damages of $100,000.

Earlier this year, Ms Higgins said that Mr Sharaz had been her ‘rock’ and ‘best friend’ during the tumultuous time.

On Sunday, a stream of high-profile Australians congratulated her on the engagement.

‘I’m here for all of this! Great news,” wrote former Olympic swimmer Leisel Jones.

‘Beautiful start to 2023! Wishing both of you nothing but love and happiness,” wrote Zali Steggal, Winter Olympian turned politician.

“Nothing but love and happiness to both of us,” The Block judge Shaynna Blaze added.
