British families are rushing to book winter holidays in the sun, despite rising prices.

In a trade update, travel giant Tui said bookings at its UK branch for winter holidays abroad are up 9 percent from pre-Covid levels.

Demand has soared, despite the average price of such holidays being 22 percent higher than before the pandemic.

Among the popular winter sun destinations are the Canary Islands, Mexico, Cape Verde and Egypt, Tui said.

It follows a strong summer for Tui, despite travel disruptions, as holidaymakers flocked to the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Greece and Turkey.

Bookings by UK holidaymakers for the summer were up 4 percent from pre-Covid levels, although prices were up 18 percent.

But demand in the UK was not matched elsewhere with total bookings for the coming winter at 78 per cent of the equivalent pre-Covid period.

The company also said flight disruptions are still at “elevated levels.”

Outgoing CEO Fritz Joussen said: ‘The trend is towards higher value or longer vacations with a higher total vacation budget.’
