Briton, 87, found dead in sea after swimming on beach in Cyprus

A British man has been found dead in the sea after swimming in the sea at a popular holiday resort in Cyprus.

The 87-year-old was found in the water on Friday after swimming in Coral Bay, Paphos.

The man was found floating unconscious in the sea at around 1.30pm after entering the water, while other holidaymakers pulled him to safety and called an ambulance.

He was taken to hospital where doctors tragically pronounced him dead, CyprusMail.

It is not yet known whether the elderly man visited the popular beach alone or with family and friends.

The 87-year-old was found in the water on Friday after going swimming in Coral Bay, Paphos (pictured).

Coral Bay’s clear waters are calm and shallow, making it a popular swimming spot, especially among families and beginners.

The beach is lined with villas and resort hotels, as well as diving centres and water sports rental companies.

Coral Bay Avenue is lined with terraces, grill restaurants and cocktail bars, making it a popular attraction for holidaymakers and travellers.

Friday’s devastating incident comes after another British tourist was found dead in his hotel room in the Greek resort of Ayia Napa on August 20.

The tourist, whose name has not been released, was taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cyprus police reported that they received a call about the man on the evening of August 20 at around 9pm and ruled out any criminal activity.

In July, a British man was also found dead in Cyprus after falling from his third-floor balcony of a luxury hotel.

The unnamed holidaymaker, aged 45, was staying at a hotel in Paphos, on the south-west coast, when the tragedy occurred, local media reported.

Officials said the man was part of a group of tourists who had been drinking until the early hours of the morning.

The victim was found dead in the main garden of the hotel in Kouklia, after falling about 10 metres.

The area around the hotel was cordoned off and officials called in a state pathologist to examine the body, CyprusMail reported.

According to Michalis Nikolaou, deputy chief of Paphos police, criminal activity has now been ruled out.

The man reportedly stayed with friends in the anonymous hotel for the past few days.

According to local media, the group had consumed “a large amount of alcohol” before the fall.

This is a breaking news story. More to come.
