Britney Spears said in a Instagram post on Sunday that she didn’t know who Mick Jagger was when they initially crossed paths at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I had no idea who I was talking to!!!” Spears captioned a photo of herself talking to Jagger, adding three yellow-faced emojis winking with their tongues out.

The annual awards ceremony was held at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City on September 6, 2001, just five days before 9/11.

In the photo, the Grammy-winning singer, 41, was seen donning a black lace dress with her flowing dark locks flowing down while chatting with the legendary rock star, 79.

Jagger was dressed in a black suit with a red button-down shirt on the show, where he presented Video of the Year awards alongside Kid Rock.

During the show, Spears delivered a memorable performance of her song I’m a Slave 4 U, which used animals such as snakes and a caged tiger.

In an interview with Kurt Loder prior to the showJagger said he was a fan of Spears, noting how in 2000 she covered the Stones’ 1965 classic (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.

“She did a really good job,” Jagger said of Britney’s cover, featured on her album Oops!… I Did It Again.

Britney thanked Jagger and said it meant a lot to hear from him.

Both had appeared on the segment to promote albums they were releasing at the time: Spears was promoting her record Britney, which was released on October 31, 2001, while Jagger was promoting his album Goddess in the Doorway, which was released the following month.

The Oops!…I Did It Again artist brought up her confrontation with Jagger in an Instagram post in September 2021, as she reflected on the show’s 20th anniversary.

“Gosh… this is me before my VMA performance with @MickJagger 20 years ago!!!!” she said. “This is one of my favorite dresses I’ve ever worn and it’s simple black lace!!!!”

Spears said she “felt a little bit out of her body with nerves” ahead of her appearance on the show.

In an interview with Kurt Loder prior to the show, Jagger said he was a fan of Spears, noting how she covered their 1965 classic (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction in 2000 and “did it really well.”

“I mean… I was in a cage with a live tiger!!!!!” she wrote. “I will never forget the moment before I entered the cage!!!!”

She said her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake recognized she was nervous and did his best to calm her down ahead of the high-profile outing.

“Justin saw I could barely speak, so he held my hand and gave me a five-minute pep talk, which obviously worked,” she said of Timberlake, who she dated from 1999 to 2002.
