British woman is found dead in Vietnamese villa as police find ‘several empty liquor bottles’ at the scene

A British woman has been mysteriously found dead in a Vietnamese villa when police at the scene reportedly discovered several empty liquor bottles.

Police in Quang Nam province were sent to the villa in Hoi An shortly after 11.15am on Boxing Day, where they found the body of the woman, believed to be about 33 years old.

A South African man was also found dead in a separate room.

Both people had registered for a long-term temporary stay in the tourist villa from July 4 of this year.

Vietnam news reports that the woman was born in 1991 and stayed in room 101, while the man was born in 1988 and stayed in room 201.

Following the tragic incident and amid investigations, police have now cordoned off the rooms as they investigate the mysterious deaths.

Quang Nam provincial police conducted an investigation at the scene and autopsies were also ordered.

Initial findings reportedly show no signs of scratches or external force on the bodies, but police did collect several empty liquor bottles from the scene.

It comes after a British tourist died in Thailand after a severe reaction to magic mushrooms.

The 25-year-old was enjoying a Christmas holiday with his girlfriend when he allegedly bought the hallucinogenic drug from a shop in Chiang Mai.

He reportedly immediately had a horrific reaction to the mushrooms and died shortly afterwards.

Medics arrived at the luxury resort where he was staying and questioned his partner, who admitted buying the items without a prescription from a nearby cannabis shop called The Glory Days.

Officers raided the store today and arrested the owner on suspicion of selling Category 5 narcotics.

Police allegedly found bags containing 7kg of magic mushrooms in the storage room and said the death occurred on December 20.

Police Major General Worapong Khamluea, commander of the Investigation Department, said: “The tourist had taken photos with his girlfriend at Tha Pae Gate, a famous landmark, and then they went to a shop and bought magic mushrooms.

“He took them back to their hotel room and ate them. But 40 minutes later he collapsed due to the reaction to the substance.

‘Officers initially checked the store but found no mushrooms on the premises, but discovered them in a storage area used by the owner.

“Four suspects have been arrested, including the owner and three employees.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Thailand and are in contact with local authorities.’

Thailand legalized cannabis in 2022, causing an explosion in flashy neon-lit pharmacies across the country.

But the ill-conceived legislation has led to an increase in mental illness, crime and the sale of other drugs through the stores.
