A British tourist has tragically died in a drowning incident in Costa Rica.

Eyewitnesses reported that the woman, 76, was enjoying a dip in the sea at Montezuma beach, Puntarenas, when a powerful wave washed over her and dragged her further from shore.

Bystanders immediately alerted authorities, who launched a search and rescue operation.

Emergency services combed the beach on foot and deployed boats for a thorough search of Montezuma Bay, but were still unable to find the swimmer after 30 minutes.

She was eventually discovered by fishermen who responded to the distress call, towed her aboard and transported her to shore.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate her in vain and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that the woman, 76, was enjoying a dip in the sea at Montezuma beach, Puntarenas, when a powerful wave washed over her and dragged her further from shore.

Paramedic Julio Benavides told Diario Extra: ‘We have received a report of a water accident specifically in Montezuma.

‘On arrival we found a woman of approximately 75 years old lying on the beach. YOU

‘On examination she showed no vital signs and unfortunately we had to declare her deceased due to submersion.’

In 2024, the Costa Rican Red Cross reports four recorded deaths from water accidents.

Both the charity and the fire brigade stress the importance of caution when visiting beaches, rivers, lakes and lagoons.

Reyner Sandoval from the fire brigade warned: ‘We would like to remind all swimmers to inquire about possible dangers when visiting rivers, beaches or other water environments.

‘Seek information from locals, look for warning signs and be vigilant for rip currents.’

The body of the deceased tourist has been transferred to the judicial mortuary for an autopsy.

An FCDO spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Costa Rica.’
