A British man has died after being pulled unconscious from the sea after vacationing in Greece.

The 64-year-old tourist was found by other holidaymakers on the beach of Alykanas in Zakynthos.

The incident occurred at around 9.15am local time (7.15am BST) on Friday, with paramedics and coastguard officers rushing to the scene.

The man was taken to Zakynthos General Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Reports say there was no lifeguard on the beach at the time of the incident.

A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Zakynthos Port Authority.

Another incident occurred on the Greek island of Crete last month after a 26-year-old was struck by lightning.

British paddleboarder Scott Seddon was filmed laughing and joking with a close friend as he emerged from the sea – just minutes before he was struck by lightning and died.
