- The 70-year-old man was taking a dip on Son Bou beach and got into trouble
A British tourist has drowned while on holiday with his wife in Menorca.
The 70-year-old man was taking a dip at Son Bou beach, the island’s longest beach, on the south coast, when the tragic incident unfolded.
Other beachgoers saw him in trouble and ran into the water to help him, while others called 999.
Emergency medical services spent more than half an hour resuscitating him when they arrived on the scene, but were unable to save him.
Local reports say the unnamed tourist’s wife was with him at the time but remained on the shoreline while he went into the sea.
They are said to have traveled to Menorca to celebrate his birthday.
They were staying in a property on a residential estate in Sant Lluis, a short drive from the beach where the tragedy occurred.

Local reports said an autopsy had confirmed drowning was the cause of death.
The incident took place around 5pm on Monday, but the man’s nationality has only just been made public.
Son Bou beach is about three kilometers long and is a reference on the island for its clean and crystal clear waters and white sand.

A handyman reportedly discovered his body floating in the water.
The 64-year-old Briton is said to have owned the building where he was found dead.
