Police in Menorca have arrested a man and are investigating two other suspects after a British teenager claimed she was raped and sexually assaulted by a holidaymaker and local workers.

The suspect arrested is a 25-year-old man who lives in the UK and was staying at the same hotel on the island.

The 19-year-old woman whose complaint led to her arrest told police he raped her after she had been drinking in a pub in Arenal d’en Castell, Menorca’s fourth-largest resort on the east side of the island where most of the attractions are located.

She is said to have returned to the hotel where she was staying with her family ‘barefoot and in her underwear’ after the alleged sexual assault at an unknown destination between the pub and her holiday home.

The teen also claimed that after the first incident, she was sexually assaulted by two other men, who she said took advantage of the situation she was in.

The troubled Briton, who had been drinking heavily, was taken to nearby Mateu Orfila Hospital for a routine check-up.

The holidaymaker was arrested hours after police were alerted in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to police sources, detectives acted quickly to prevent him from leaving the island and flying home.

He is believed to have already appeared in court, but it was not clear this morning whether he had been remanded in custody or released on bail pending the ongoing criminal investigation.

The two other men, described as seasonal workers, are under formal investigation but have not been formally arrested.

One of them is Spanish. The nationality of the other man is not yet known.

The police investigation into the alleged early morning sex crimes was led by the Menorca Guardia Civil, although local police employed by the town hall of Es Mercadal, the municipality that includes Arenal d’en Castell, were also involved.

The British teenager is believed to have left Menorca after giving a statement to police and agreeing to help investigators with their enquiries in the coming weeks and months.
