A British pensioner has tragically died after being pushed to the ground by intruders who broke into his Spanish home.

The 81-year-old was taken to hospital after being attacked by burglars in Estepa near Seville around 7pm on Sunday night.

He was checked by medics and discharged, but later developed complications and was rushed back to nearby Merced Hospital in Osuna, but died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police have confirmed that the victim was a British expatriate.

Detectives are still hunting those responsible.

The dead man has so far been identified only by his initials – AHB.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Seville, who is investigating the incident, confirmed: “An 81-year-old British man has died after a break-in at his home in Estepa near Seville.

Officers responded to the incident around 7 p.m. on Sunday and took the victim to hospital.

He died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“No arrests have been made yet and we are still investigating.”

A police source added: “The victim told officers he was pushed by one of the intruders while trying to resist the break-in.

He fell to the ground and was taken to the hospital and tragically died a few days later.

“He made no formal statement to police before he died and officers are working based on what he told police at the scene before his admission to hospital.

“Agents are still investigating whether anything was stolen and that is complicated by the fact that there is no formal explanation and the victim was unable to give a detailed account of the incident to detectives before being admitted to hospital.”

The victim was told he was allowed to go home a few hours after the break-in and died after being re-admitted to La Merced Hospital in Osuna.

The hospital chiefs have not yet commented.

According to local reports, police are hunting three suspects, although detectives could not confirm the number today.

A town hall source: ‘The local police went to the building on Sunday evening at the request of the Guardia Civil after an emergency call.

They spoke to the British pensioner on the spot who told them that several persons had entered his property with the intention of robbing him.

“He had an injury to his face, but there is no indication that he was beaten up, as initial reports of this incident suggested.

“He was taken to hospital and went home a few hours later after treatment.

About 24 hours later, local police were asked to go to the same property and found medical workers assisting the same man.

“He was taken to hospital and passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning.”

The autopsy is said to have already taken place, but the results have not been made public, as is customary in Spain.

Estepa is a town and municipality in the extreme southeast of the province of Seville.

It is located north of the Sierra del Becerro mountains.

Besides being known for its production of Christmas sweets, called mantecados in Spanish, tourism is an important part of the local economy, along with agriculture such as olive growing.
