A British Olympic cyclist has been arrested on suspicion of rape and indecent assault.

The expilot has held a prominent position in professional cycling after his retirement from competition. He has worked with some of the biggest names in Britain’s most successful Olympic sport.

The Mail on Sunday knows the identity of the suspect, but cannot reveal it for legal reasons. Police said the man had been released on bail pending an investigation into the allegations.

British cycling has enjoyed a golden period since the advent of the National Lottery dramatically increased the sport’s resources in the late 1990s.

Jockeys like Victoria Pendleton and Laura Kenny have won multiple Olympic golds on the track over the past two decades.

Team Ineos, formerly called Team Sky, has emulated that success on the road under the leadership of Sir Dave Brailsford, winning seven Tours de France.

However, British Cycling’s governing body is emerging from a turbulent period. Its chief executive, Brian Facer, resigned in October, three weeks after environmental groups criticized a new partnership with Shell UK.

Police said the man was released on bail pending an investigation into the allegations.

The governing body lost its main sponsor, HSBC, when the bank canceled its deal in December 2021, four years ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, the organization had to admit that it was wrong to recommend that people not ride bikes during the Queen’s funeral.

A British Cycling spokesman said: “Abuse of any kind has no place in the sport.” We urge anyone who has concerns about non-recent or ongoing abuse to report them directly to British Cycling’s protection team by emailing compliance@britishcycling.org.uk, or through the NSPCC’s independent free helpline on 0800 614 458
