British star Millie Bobby Brown hits back at critics who accused her of trying to sound ‘more American’ – insists accent switch is ‘not intentional’

Millie Bobby Brown sets the record straight after being accused of actively losing her British accent in favor of sounding ‘more American’.

The 20-year-old Stranger Things star raised eyebrows last week when she appeared on The Show tonight while fans called her out for speaking “differently” during her interview with host Jimmy Fallon.

Addressing the comments on TikTok, she explained how growing up in both the United Kingdom and the United States has influenced her accent over the years.

Brown was born in Spain and spent part of her childhood in Bournemouth, England and Orlando, Florida before settling in Atlanta, Georgia.

‘So I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America,” she explained. “I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt. And so I want to imitate people.’

Brown claims that when she’s around Americans like Jimmy Fallon or her fiancĂ©, Jake Bongiovi, she has a natural instinct to mimic the way they speak.

“I can’t help but feel that when I’m around my fiancĂ© or when I’m around people like Jimmy Fallon, who have a very American accent, I want to replicate it,” Brown continued.

‘And now that I’m in England I want to emulate that. I don’t do it intentionally and I’m sorry if it offends you. But listen, I’m doing my best!’ she said as she looked straight at the camera.

Upping the entertainment factor, the host said, “She’s Millie Bobby Brown and she can talk any way she wants.”

“I’m doing my best,” the actress repeated, speaking to dramatic effect.

Baleg, who revealed he comes from “a very small northern town” in England, agreed with Brown’s explanation of her changing accent by sharing how he experienced a similar situation when he went to study in another part of the country.

“I was suddenly around people from the South and my mom said, ‘Who do you think you’re talking all fancy about?’ and I’m going to show her that clip and say, ‘You know what, Joanne? I’m trying my best!”

“Yes, Joanne,” Brown said in support of Baleggen, her voice rising even higher.

In a bid to prove her Britishness, the host presented Brown with a gift voucher to popular restaurant chain Nando’s, which she immediately accepted, adding: ‘Do you know I’m going to Nando’s for lunch? I’m really going to use this.’

Most of the backlash over her accent came after she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 29, where a fan described the way she spoke as “like a rich valley girl,” according to Page six.

‘Her (British) accent is hardly there anymore. I know (she) has been in (America) for a long time but omg it was so strong,” another person commented under a clip from the show.

“It almost sounds like she’s miming an American accent during this interview,” another viewer added.

“Her (British) accent is barely there anymore,” one user noted, as reported by E News!, while another added, “(She) pronounces certain words like a (Brit), but the cadence she uses is so American.’

In addition to the critics, Brown also had supporters who suspected that her changing accent was probably due to the fact that she had spent a lot of time in the US with Bongiovi in New Jersey.

“She can turn her accents on and off, I love it!!” another fan gushed.
