British man, 62, ‘drowns’ off the coast of Spain at a resort on the Costa Brava
A British man is believed to have drowned off the coast of Spain at a resort on the Costa Brava.
The 62-year-old was found lifeless in the water after a search by the emergency services.
A woman reportedly raised the alarm around 1pm today after the man failed to return from a swim on a beach in the resort town of Calella de Palafrugell in the northeastern province of Girona, close to Spain’s border with France.
He had gone swimming in the bay of Sant Roc, a residential area of the city surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of rocks, cliffs and old fishermen’s houses.
According to police sources, an autopsy has yet to take place, but early indications pointed to him drowning in a tragic accident.

An investigation was underway today, coordinated by a local investigating judge.
It was not immediately clear whether the woman who raised the alarm was the man’s partner or whether they lived nearby or were on holiday.
The latest drowning drama involving a British national came just over a week after a British man died in Tenerife in front of his son.
The unnamed 58-year-old was pulled from the sea by two people, one of whom is believed to have been resuscitated by a nurse after he went into cardiac arrest.
Emergency services continued to try to resuscitate him after arriving at the scene near the Punta de Teno lighthouse on the northwestern tip of Tenerife, but they were unable to do anything to save him.

The alarm was raised on Friday, April 21 at around 5 p.m.
A second person described as a minor who was with him at the time was assisted by psychologists. Well-placed sources later confirmed that the boy, whose age is unknown, was the dead man’s son.
Calella de Palafrugell is known for its rocky coves, sandy beaches and impressive seafood restaurants.
There are several golf courses nearby and the famous Cap Roig music festival is held in a botanical garden near the town.
