A British man has drowned off the coast of the island of Tenerife while a child watched in horror.

The 58-year-old was pulled from the sea by two people, including a nurse who performed CPR as they waited for emergency services to arrive at the Punta de Teno lighthouse on the northwestern tip of Tenerife.

A child who was with the man was assisted by psychologists. It is not clear if the pair were related.

The alarm was sounded around 5 p.m. Friday.

An emergency coordination center led by the regional government said in a statement: ‘A 58-year-old British man was killed in an incident on the coast of the Teno lighthouse in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte.

“We received the alert just before 5pm on Friday asking for help for a person who had been pulled from the water by two swimmers and had gone into cardiac arrest.

Vacationers and islanders are drawn to the area for its spectacular views

“One of the rescuers was a nurse and began performing CPR until emergency services arrived.

A rescue helicopter was mobilized, as well as an ambulance and staff from a nearby health center along with local police and Civil Guard agents.

“The experts continued CPR efforts when they arrived, but were unable to save the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A team of psychologists was also brought in to assist a child accompanying the deceased.”

Punta de Teno is a rocky headland that forms the northwestern tip of Tenerife.

It is part of a protected area called the Teno Rural Park that extends over several municipalities.

The current lighthouse was commissioned in 1978 when it replaced an old one built in 1897. It is not accessible to tourists and cannot be visited.

Vacationers and islanders are drawn to the area for its spectacular views.
