British horse rider Georgie Campbell died on Sunday at the age of 37 after a fall during the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon.
Campbell and Global Quest were competing in the CCI-S 4* event when the accident occurred on the cross-country course. They fell near a log in the water at gate 5b, known as the Symonds & Sampson Splash.
Medical professionals responded immediately, but Campbell tragically died.
During her career, Campbell competed in more than 200 events, winning six times, including the five-star Badminton and Burghley events. In 2020, she married event rider Jesse Campbell, who previously represented New Zealand at the Tokyo Olympics.
A statement from Bicton International Horse Trials said: ‘It is with deep regret that we announce that Georgie Campbell (GBR) has suffered a fatal accident whilst competing at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon, England on Sunday 26 May 2024.

‘Medical professionals attended immediately after her fall at gate 5b, but unfortunately she could not be saved.
‘The horse, Global Quest, was assessed by the vets on site and walked back to the stable unharmed.
“To respect the family’s privacy at this extremely difficult and sad time, no further details will be shared.”
The Bicton Horse Trials were due to take place between Thursday 23 May and Sunday 26 May at the Bicton Arena in Devon.
Earlier in the day, a statement had been released announcing that Campbell and Global Quest had fallen onto the course and that there would be a delay of approximately one hour.
The CCI-S 4* event was subsequently abandoned following news that Campbell had suffered a fatal fall.
