British Gas extends half-price electric offer on Sundays into 2024… and you can save on Christmas Day too
- New and existing customers are eligible for a 50% discount on Sundays
- British Gas has extended the offer until the end of February 2024
- Customers can also save on Christmas Day
British Gas has further expanded its half-price electricity offer over the winter, with customers also able to save on Christmas Day.
The energy supplier introduced the PeakSave Sundays offer this summer, to allow its customers to use electricity in the evening outside peak hours.
It announced an expansion of its offering throughout the winter, including Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. It has now confirmed that the scheme will continue until the end of February 2024.
Half price Sundays: British Gas offers its customers a 50% discount on electricity
British Gas also announced that it will offer half-price electricity through the program on December 25.
Lower demand from businesses and industry on Sundays means more renewable energy is available on the grid, meaning fewer fossil fuels need to be burned.
Catherine O'Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy said: 'The coming months will bring both colder weather and all the excitement and fun of the festive season.
“We know that many people will be spending more time at home during this period, especially on Christmas Day, and we wanted to give something back to our customers by helping them save on their energy bills while contributing to a greener electricity grid.”
Customers receive a 50 percent discount on all electricity consumed every Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Although both new and existing customers are eligible for the scheme, they will need a smart meter and sign up for half-hourly metering to participate. All savings appear as a credit on customers' energy bills.
British Gas says 425,000 customers have received £2.5 million for switching their consumption to off-peak hours.
O'Kelly added: 'We expect the benefit of these savings to increase over winter as residential energy consumption increases, and we hope to welcome even more customers to the PeakSave program to take advantage of the savings.'
How much can you save on your energy bill?
With British Gas' new deal, the average customer will save £30.61 over 13 Sundays and Christmas Day.
On Christmas Day itself, you can save 59p if you use your electric oven for two hours outside peak hours, and a further 56p for using the electric hob.
While this may seem like a small saving, customers who shift their usage outside of peak hours on Sundays can save £8.23 on 13 Sundays and Christmas.
Customers can also save £2.74 by washing their clothes on Sunday, and £4.12 if they use a tumble dryer during that period.
And for customers who like to play video games, they can save £4.90 if they play between 11am and 4pm on Sundays.
