British Gas and E.ON can challenge Octopus Energy's takeover of Bulb, rules say

Ruling: British Gas and E.ON dispute the takeover of Bulb by Octopus

British Gas and E.ON can continue their legal battle over Octopus Energy's takeover of a rival, a judge has ruled.

The suppliers dispute Octopus' takeover of Bulb, which collapsed in 2021. Bulb's customers have helped Octopus become the UK's third largest domestic energy supplier, after British Gas and E.ON.

The suppliers took the government to court last year, arguing that it had unlawfully committed billions to supporting Bulb without considering the impact on the market.

Their case was dismissed by London's High Court in March.

But Court of Appeal Judge Nicholas Underhill yesterday allowed them to challenge that decision.
