British expat reveals the three things Australians can’t do – as his rant about tradies quickly backfires

A British expat living in Sydney has blasted Australian traditions, claiming they are ‘programmed’ to refuse to work after a certain hour.

The construction worker claimed his Australian colleagues were too preoccupied with counterfeit drinks to work after 3pm every day.

‘These guys don’t work until after three o’clock; they can’t do it. They’re starting to itch,” he said in a video shared on social media.

‘They say, “Oh, it’s three o’clock. I want a schooner.”

“They’re determined to stop working and go to the beach and have a beer.”

Australian trade workers typically start their day early around 6 or 7 a.m. and end an eight-hour day at 3 p.m. – although this can vary.

Many were quick to defend Australian traditions in the comments.

“In defense of traditions, they start work sometime between 5 and 6 a.m., so they have worked a full day at 3 p.m.,” one person argued.

“I was a professional who worked from 7:30am to 5pm most days, sometimes until dark if I had to,” agreed another.

“Another whiny Pom,” one Australian couldn’t add.

Australian tradies tend to work early, starting with the sun in winter and aiming to finish as early as possible to avoid the heat in summer.

The Building Institute of New South Wales said about half of tradies work nine or more hours each working day and one in 10 works more than 11 hours.

But that wasn’t the only thing that irritated the Brit about Australia.

He claimed Australians can’t ‘name places’ and instead took inspiration from England – and were terrible drivers.

“There are so many places, even just in Sydney you have like Guildford, Epping, Liverpool… Newcastle too,” he said.

Many viewers were quick to remind him that many places in Australia were named by English settlers, derived from locations in England.

“It was the British who named the places, not the Australians,” said one.

‘[Oh my god] the English colonized Australia and named everything. Don’t you know your own history, buddy?’ another added.

The Brit also accused Australians of being bad drivers.

‘You’re in Sydney, aren’t you? I’m scared to drive in Sydney,” said one.

‘Sydney! I’m terrified of their driving. Crazy fast. But you might have to drive like that to get anywhere,” another Australian added.

“Every time you want a ride to the Airport Champion [message] me,” an Australian offered.
