Robyn, who now lives in Melbourne, listed the weather and the popularity of barefoot walking as some of the surprising things she found. She’s been living here for five years and still can’t understand some Australian habits, but she’s obsessed with others.
‘Aussie stuff that sent me into a coma when I moved here from the UK,’ Robyn captioned her now-viral Tik Tok.
The number one habit that caught her off guard was seeing people walking around the supermarket or other stores barefoot.
‘This shocked me. You would never catch anyone not on a beach barefoot in the UK,” she said.
The second surprising thing was the fact that alcohol is not sold in the supermarket.
‘I had no idea this wasn’t a thing. First I said, “where do I go and buy some wine?” and someone told me to go to bottle-O and I was like “what is bottle-O?”
‘I had no idea. She shocked me to the bone,’ she said.
He was also surprised by the weather that reached temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius.
“When I first lived here, I was living in Sydney and it wiped me out, it absolutely killed me,” she said.
However, there were two discoveries that came as a pleasant surprise.
The first was lemon, lime and bitters, a popular cocktail in Australia.
‘This surprise was in the best way possible. Thank you so much for introducing me to this, it’s amazing. It’s like liquid gold,” she said.
She was also impressed with the espresso martinis, another popular cocktail.
‘I’m pretty sure you can get espresso martinis in the UK. But I am from a small coastal town, ”he explained.
His followers were amused by the list, however one feature caused a division of opinion among Australians.
Several people shared their love of going shoeless.
‘I’ve been fighting shoes since elementary school lol. I hate shoes,’ said one woman.
However, others disagree with going barefoot in places other than the beach.
“I’m Australian and it still gives the barefoot people in the supermarket the creeps,” said one man.
“Barefoot in the supermarket makes me feel bad,” agreed one woman.
