British Cycling’s flagship velodrome has embarrassingly suffered a roof leak just a month after it reopened following a £27 million renovation.

The National Cycling Center in Manchester closed for refurbishment in the summer of 2021 after a report warned the building could suffer ‘catastrophic’ failures.

Sport England, central and local government footed the bill for the ‘essential’ repair work, with more than £1 million spent on repairing the roof.

However, water spots have been spotted on the track this week, with Manchester City Council confirming there has been a leak which they want to urgently resolve.

Luthfur Rahman, deputy chairman of the council, told Mail Sport: ‘We are aware of this issue and will take swift action to ensure it is repaired.

‘During the £27 million renovation of the velodrome, roof repairs have been identified and carried out, but additional issues have been identified which will be addressed as a priority.’

British Cycling insists the issue has not affected their riders’ preparation for next summer’s Olympic Games in Paris. They returned to training in Manchester in December 2022 after moving to Derby, while the ground reopened to the public last month.

The National Cycling Center currently hosts the UCI Masters Track World Championships.
