When Britain’s Got Talent returned to ITV screens in April, the main judge rocked the stylish sunglasses again, but had previously insisted it had nothing to do with a ‘mystery illness’.

In February, the 64-year-old music mogul explained to some ‘concerned’ fans on Instagram that he needs them for health reasons.

Sharing a photo of himself wearing the glasses to the jury, he wrote: ‘According to the internet, I just discovered that I have a ‘mystery illness’.

‘For anyone concerned, I missed two auditions at the end of a day two weeks ago because I get migraines after long days in the movie lights.

He ended by saying: ‘Next week we’re filming BGT in Manchester – looking forward to seeing you then. P.S. That’s why I wear these glasses!’

The show wrapped its auditions in scenes that aired on Sunday evening, with the semi-finals set to air live in the coming days.

According to ITV, it is the biggest entertainment series of the year so far on any channel.

But the talent show has still seen a marked decline in popularity over the years, with current viewing figures a far cry from its peak of 13 million in 2009.

The current series got off to a promising start last month, with overnight figures showing the launch episode attracting an average of 5 million viewers, peaking at 5.8 million.
