Britain becomes first country to deliver long-range precision missiles to Ukraineā€¦ but Labor still says UK is failing to support Ukraine with arms

  • Ben Wallace said the UK has supplied long-range precision missiles to Ukraine
  • The Storm Shadow cruise missiles are accurate to over 150 miles

Labor yesterday accused the government of failing to honor commitments to supply arms to Ukraine.

It came as Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told parliament that the UK was the first country to deliver long-range precision missiles to Ukraine.

The Storm Shadow cruise missiles, accurate to over 150 miles, will play a key role in the country’s long-awaited counter-offensive against the Russian occupiers.

But his statement to the House of Commons was overshadowed by his Labor counterpart John Healey, who challenged Mr Wallace on the realities of aid deliveries.

President Zelensky confirmed yesterday that the fight against Ukraine has been put on the brakes due to a shortage of vital military equipment, including armored vehicles.

President Zelensky confirmed yesterday that the fight against Ukraine has slowed down due to a shortage of vital military equipment, including armored vehicles.

President Zelensky confirmed yesterday that the fight against Ukraine has slowed down due to a shortage of vital military equipment, including armored vehicles.

Concerns were expressed in the House of Commons that military aid promised by Britain has taken too long to reach the front line.

Mr Wallace was asked how many of the armored vehicles promised by the UK have arrived in Ukraine. He was also challenged as to why the British-led International Fund for Ukraine, established in August 2022, has yet to arm Kiev.

Mr. Healey was critical of the time it took military aid to reach the battlefield.

He said: ā€œSix months ago the defense minister said he was ā€œopen-mindedā€ to send longer-range missiles. And it was three months ago when the Prime Minister announced that the UK would be the first country to do so. Why has it taken so long? Ukraine now needs military aid on the frontline.

President Zelensky has said ‘not everything has arrived yet’. Russia is far from a depleted fighting force. I am proud of the British leadership in Ukraine over the past year. In six months I still want to be able to say that.’

The IFU, run by the UK and six other European countries, is plagued by delays and bureaucracy. Since its inception, it has signed only three contracts with defense manufacturers to supply Ukraine. So far nothing has arrived.

Today’s announcement of new weapons is the first since February by the British government. Mr Wallace said the Storm Shadow donation was another first for Britain as it was also the first country to donate tanks to Ukraine.

Mr Wallace told Parliament: ‘The donation of these weapon systems gives Ukraine the best chance to defend itself against Russia’s continued brutality. We just won’t stand by while Russia kills civilians. Unfortunately, Russia has continued on this dark path. That is why the Prime Minister and I have decided to provide extended range capabilities.’

Wallace’s announcement came after President Zelensky explained why Ukraine’s counter-offensive had been postponed.

In a TV interview, he said his troops “need a little more time” because military equipment, such as armored vehicles, are still arriving. His admission came after he pleaded with the EU yesterday to speed up the delivery of artillery shells.

Vladimir Putin would slow down Russia’s military operations while he waits for the West to lose interest in the war.
