Bristol Palin took to Instagram Stories on Wednesday to express her sadness over her son Tripp Johnston’s move from Texas to Alaska.
Bristol, 33, who currently lives in Austin, Texas, said it was a mixed feeling because Tripp had moved back to Alaska, the family’s hometown.
Bristol is the mother of three children: son Tripp, 15, with ex-fiancé Levi Johnston, 34; and daughters Sailor Grace, eight, and Atlee Bay, seven, with ex-husband Dakota Meyer, 36.
She posted a photo of her two daughters on the doorstep of their home to commemorate their first day of school, while describing the changing dynamics in her family.
The Wasilla, Alaska, resident posted a photo of her two youngest daughters alongside the post, along with a caption explaining how she’s coping with the emotional time.

“This was the hardest ‘first day of school’ yet, with one of the biggest pieces of my heart missing,” Bristol said. “Tripp has decided to finish high school in Alaska to be closer to his dad and our entire family.
“If you know Tripp, you know he lives for hunting and fishing. I really can’t blame him for wanting to get home.”
Bristol, the daughter of former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who appeared on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in 2010 and Teen Mom OG in 2018, said she is doing well despite the difficult time.
“As difficult as it has been to come to this decision, it really isn’t about what I want,” Bristol said.
Bristol outlined how she deals with the family matter, including pointing out that her son is getting older and how important it is for him to spend time with his father.
“He’s almost 16 years old and that relationship with his father is far more important than my own selfish desire to keep him with his mother forever!” Bristol said.
Bristol said she is still very emotional about the situation and hopes the transition will be as smooth as possible.
“I can’t talk about it yet without crying,” Bristol said, “but I’m selfishly praying that it’s a quick year and that the transition is smooth for us.”

Bristol came to national attention in 2008 when her mother campaigned for vice president alongside the then Republican presidential candidate, the late Senator John McCain of Arizona.
She appeared with Johnston at the Republican Party convention in September 2008, when her pregnancy with Tripp made headlines, while her mother quickly rose to political prominence as McCain’s running mate.
