Jurgen Klopp insists it is unfair to conclude that this Liverpool team has reached the end of its cycle and says judgment should be reserved until the end of the season.

The Liverpool manager accepts that his team is currently under siege, with Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds putting them closer to the drop zone than the top four; Champions League qualification is a minimum requirement for owners of Fenway Sports Group and the goal is in jeopardy.

In fact, Liverpool’s best hope of getting into the league next year may be by winning this season extension, but even the most ardent fan wouldn’t bet that outcome will be realized in Istanbul next June, given the whimsical shape they have shown.

Klopp has reiterated that his conviction will not be a quick fix to Liverpool’s problems, but in a passionate defense of his group, the German emphasized their desire to keep fighting – and he has not lost his appetite for the fight ahead.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s final group stage game with Napoli, Klopp gave a six-minute response, and over time covered every aspect of the criticism leveled at Liverpool.

He said: ‘Obviously we’re all there doing the work in public and I think the judgment on this will be later in the season or maybe at the end of the season where we say okay,’ clear now that it’s for this group of players or whatever.

“For this manager if you will.” The question will then be asked, but at the moment it’s not 100 percent fair to judge the team – that is, the squad – because we never had them available. Especially now first, top quality, which doesn’t help.

“That doesn’t mean the others aren’t top notch, but with the amount of games we had, we’d usually make changes and we can’t do that. It’s a very similar situation in midfield for a long time, many players who were out came back and then out again.

“We had it pretty much everywhere. Even if it’s unfair, it’s fine, it’s normal, that’s our life, you’re absolutely right to ask these questions, but we’ll have to answer them later. We’re all, I’m not quite sure what the word is, out there to be judged.

‘It’s all right. manager, players that’s life in professional football, but right now I’m not thinking about it. We have to go through this and if you want to get out of something, very often you have to go through it first. That is what we do.’

Liverpool must beat Napoli by four goals to win the group, but Klopp is not thinking too much about that result.

He will make his team final after practice on Tuesday morning and Ibrahima Konate could return to the heart of the defence.
