Brisbane real estate agent forced to explain the brutal ‘prison cell’ aesthetic of $300-a-week rental

An Australian real estate agent has been forced to explain why one of their rental properties resembles a ‘prison cell’.

The one-bedroom property in Brisbane, with a combined living area and kitchen, is surrounded by dark gray concrete walls and a polished black floor.

Photos of the property, which has a rent of $300 per week, show just one square window at the back of the room.

But the real estate agent of the property says that the appearance was deliberately chosen, designed with an ‘industrial’ look.

The narrow and compact room also features a sink, a small bar bridge, a small bathroom and an adjacent shower room.

An open wooden wardrobe and a bookshelf have also been placed in the small room.

Basic facilities such as electricity, water, gas and internet connection are available for the prospective tenant.

Tenants expressed their shock on social media after photos of the ominous-looking property were uploaded to Facebook with the caption ‘the word you’re looking for is mobile’.

“It’s so grim and $300 a week,” one user wrote on Reddit.

“F***ing hell, that’s bleak,” said another.

One user suggested that the owner of the house may not have bothered to paint the walls because whoever was going to live there would have to pay a hefty amount of rent to pay for the upkeep of the property.

Others said the rental offered good value, especially for low-income people such as students.

“When you’re a student, you don’t need much else,” one tenant wrote.

“I’ve seen worse considering the utilities are included,” said another.

The property’s rental agent, Peng Zhao, stood behind the property’s value.

He admitted that the home’s interior design could force tenants to think twice about moving into the property.

“It was built with an industrial feel,” he said Yahoo.

“(It) may not suit everyone.”
