Brisbane neighbours at war over the construction of a 2.5metre fence
An angry homeowner’s rant over an 8ft fence built by her neighbor has backfired after Aussies told them they should be ‘grateful’.
The Brisbane resident turned to Reddit on Thursday and asked for urgent advice.
‘Our neighbor removed our shared fence, without any communication or notice to us. Then they build a new 8-foot fence, which prevents light from entering our house,” the fed-up homeowner wrote.
‘The neighbor has cited that they are doing this to ensure their dogs are controlled, but they have not replaced the shorter fences in their yard and have only built a ‘barricade’ style fence along part of our fence .
“Brisbane City Council has said there is nothing they can do as the neighbor just needs to get the fence certified to meet the requirements.
“Qld State has advised that we can take them before QCAT (the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal), but this could take several months.”
The homeowner said negotiations with their neighbor had reached a stalemate.
‘I tried to speak very politely to the neighbor, but it didn’t work. “I have asked them to pause the work until we can mutually reach an agreement and even consider contributing to the costs,” she said.

The neighbor who installed the new fence says she has been trying to install a new fence for years.
“At Christmas the fence fell down and I urgently had to get someone in,” she said news.com.au.
“We talked to the municipality, the municipality said go ahead and build it, then worry about the certification.”
The woman said she had a tense relationship with her neighbor because of her dogs.
“The only reason for that high was because her texts and letters were about the dogs, but to be honest it’s nice not to have to look in their house,” she said.
Aussies were quick to criticize the homeowner, with one commenter suggesting she should ‘count her lucky stars’.
‘You get a fence, so you are safe and you don’t have to pay. You should be overjoyed,” said one.
“I’m more shocked he didn’t ask for cash, be super grateful.”

“So their dogs got out and attacked you so the neighbor covers the entire cost of a new fence to keep this from happening to you and he even puts the fence all the way back on its side and you complain lmao said a second.
‘Yes, take it to QCAT and get 50% of the cost reimbursed.’
‘I’m not going to lie, the new fence looks better, offers more privacy and is free. I would count my lucky stars, wrote a third.
‘Your fence wasn’t quite sharp enough. This is better. Take the open fence,” a third suggested.
‘Why would you be against this, the fence looks beautiful and offers even more privacy and you don’t even have to pay for it!’ said a fourth.
Others, however, were more sympathetic to the homeowner.
“OP’s main complaint is the lack of light in their home. A valid complaint that many people here overlook,” someone wrote.
In response to the comments, the homeowner said they would “happy to foot the bill” to replace the fence with a “waist-height fence to provide us with plenty of natural light.”
