A large pothole and excessive fractures in the bitumen have developed along George Street, where the broken main is believed to have been located.
Both George Street and its connecting street, Charlotte Street, have been closed and pedestrians have also been urged to avoid the area.
The roads will remain closed for up to 48 hours as workers try to control flooding and repair broken roads.

Emergency services used sandbags to ease flooding of surrounding streets and buildings, which had slowed the water flow by 6 p.m.
Shortly thereafter, Urban Utilities managed to shut off the burst main, further halting the water flow.
Debris, including rocks, is still scattered across the street in the CBD.
More to come.
