A cat owner has been told her pet ‘disappears’ if she doesn’t lock it inside by an irate neighbor who left her a very threatening note.

The Brisbane woman shared a photo of the blunt handwritten note to Reddit, asking for advice on how to keep her rescue cat indoors.

She explained that a feud had started with her neighbor after her cat walked into their yard and argued with the cat next door.

“I was mortified and apologized and immediately removed the cat flap on the back door and put the door back so she couldn’t get out, but we had a tradie leave the garage and she sneaked out,” she said.

After her cat’s second escape, she left a note that read: ‘Check your animals or they will disappear!’.

The neighbor even went a step further and chose to write the message on the back of a printed council information page, with sections on responsible pet ownership marked.

The woman said she was frustrated that her neighbor had left such an ‘insulting’ letter without approaching her first.

“The problem is our house has casement windows and young children, and I’m always on their case about closing windows and not leaving doors open,” she added, asking for advice on whether a digital fence would work. .

She said she kept her cat indoors as much as possible, but the animal “fled outside.”

“Their cat has been on our side of the road too, so it’s kind of the pot calling the kettle black,” the owner said.

“The neighbors who complained to ME have giant aggressive dogs that jump on their fence and go crazy every time someone passes and we live opposite a children’s park.

“Oh, and my neighbor’s dog barks all night at 3 a.m. when she’s on duty, so it’s just a bunch of hypocrisy that I’m getting the threats.”

Her post was inundated with comments and sparked fierce division among many Australian pet owners.

Many pointed to the fact that cats are known to kill native animals and said the woman had a responsibility to keep her pet inside.

‘Cats kill for fun, they don’t kill for food, and one cat can decimate the local wildlife. Keeping cats indoors has long been a thing for people who know how destructive cats can be,” said one person.

“Bring the cat back to be relocated to a home where it can actually stay inside and not run around harassing people and killing wildlife,” said another.

‘Take it seriously. My family got a letter and the cat ‘disappeared’. Try to change whatever the cat does,” one wrote.

One man said he caught five cats in a trap on his property and dropped them all off at the shelter in the past six months.

Others were more sympathetic to the cat lover problem.

‘People who threaten or actually hurt animals are scum. Literally human waste. No excuse,” said one.

“I think you’re doing the right thing. I’m sorry you had to deal with this, I’d be offended if I got that letter.’

‘You are doing very well and should your neighbor keep his cat inside too? Accidents happen, what counts is the work you do,” added another.

Brisbane City Council guidelines require cats to be microchipped and kept in enclosed areas when outside.
