A catastrophic two-vehicle crash has resulted in the death of a passenger in one car despite the efforts of two off-duty doctors who pulled over and provided aid.

Two cars collided on the Warrego Highway at Lawes in Queensland on Sunday around 10:40 pm.

A driver and a passenger in a red 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan suffered critical injuries after slamming into a 2022 Toyota Avalon sedan travelling westbound.

The passenger of the Mitsubishi died at the scene, while the male driver was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Two off-duty doctors who happened to be driving past pulled over and provided care to the occupants in both vehicles before paramedics arrived.

The three occupants in the Toyota all sustained serious injuries.

A female passenger in her 30s suffered back and chest pain, another female passenger in her 30s had chest pain, while the male driver in his 20s had back pain and minor injuries.

Police are trying to identify the occupants of the Mitsubishi.

The Warrego Highway was closed for up five hours following the crash as responders cleared the area. 

The freeway reopened around 4am. 

Motorists with dashcam footage of the crash, or those who happened to drive past moments before, have been urged by police to come forward.
