Payne Haas will take a personal leave of absence from the Broncos until January 16 after his mother was charged for her alleged role in a car crash that killed three people.
The Broncos NRL squad return from their Christmas break this week, but Haas has been granted extra time away from Red Hill.
Haas’s mother, Uiatu Taufua, was charged with three counts of manslaughter after a head-on car crash on the Gold Coast last Friday.

On Monday, Detective Sergeant Major Mark Procter said police would further allege that Taufua’s vehicle was driven in an extremely dangerous manner on the wrong side of the road at high speeds.
Haas is coming off a stellar season and was the only Broncos player selected on the Dally M.
He also joined champion running back Allan Langer as the second player in history to receive the Broncos’ best and fairest award four times in a row.
Haas accomplished the impressive feat at just 22 years old.
Police will also allege that Taufua evaded police prior to the accident and was driving without a license.
Brisbane is in the midst of the longest finals drought in club history, three seasons, and will need another great year from Haas to get back into the top eight in what will be Kevin Walters’ third season as head coach. .
Haas suffered a minor ankle injury early in pre-season, but has since made a full recovery and returned to training.
The Broncos’ 2023 season begins against defending premiers Penrith on March 3.
