Solly March has been challenged to be like a ‘winger for the big teams’ and keep the goals flowing this season to keep Brighton high.

Right winger March, 29, scored twice in the top-flight Seagulls’ second-half blitz in their victory over Wolves to make it back-to-back 4-1 victories.

“My target for this season is 15 goals,” said March. “It’s still a long way to go, but it’s a good start. I watched it before the game with some coaches and they told me to break my stomach to get into the box and it worked great. The deliveries were perfect.’

The dictation with 15 goals comes from Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.

“I have spoken to him and I want more goals from him,” said the Italian. “If you look at the top of the table, the wingers of the big teams score 10 to 15 goals per season.”

The March finishes were clinical after Pervis Estupinan made it 2-0, but it was compatriot Kaoru Mitoma’s miraculous goal to open the scoring that will be remembered.

The 26-year-old Japan international beat four players in a quick run from the left flank and March said it was when the ball was glued to his teammate’s foot.

It was a goal that will only add to the adulation Mitoma is receiving in his home country, with observers saying he has sparked the most interest in a Japanese player since Shinji Kagawa played and scored for Borussia Dortmund.

“It was unbelievable – I think he put some glue on his boot before the game!” said March. “You don’t see many players sliding the ball like that.

“Having the strength to hold off a few players is something when you consider that he is quite small, like me.

“To then have the composure and the desire to finish – as he could have gone down and made a foul – made it great.”

New Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil saw his team lose the first two games, but is convinced that his intensive style of play is the way forward. “I prefer to be aggressive,” said O’Neil. “We’re going to be flexible, but let’s try to keep creating the number of opportunities that we do, strengthen ourselves in terms of opportunities that we get and try to be more clinical.”
