Brighton have opened talks to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud.

The Germany international is a free agent and has had interest and a number of offers from across Europe, but talks with Roberto de Zerbi’s club are progressing and the Italian coach is seen as a big draw in the negotiations.

Dahoud, 27, has made more than 140 appearances for Dortmund, but just 10 this season after dislocating a shoulder last year.

He would have undergone medical tests in London on Monday.

Brighton have already signed Joao Pedro from Watford and are also close to a deal with Liverpool’s James Milner.

However, they are determined to receive bids for Liverpool targets Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo.

Syrian-born Dahoud joined from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017 in a deal agreed when Thomas Tuchel was still in charge of the German giants.

By the time Dahoud’s move was completed, Tuchel had left Signal Iduna Park club, beating Liverpool and Barcelona to his signature, while Chelsea and Manchester City had previously also been keen before he was snapped up by Dortmund.

Dahoud made his breakthrough in Germany in 2021 and earned his first two international matches against Turkey and the Czech Republic.
