Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed midfielder Enock Mwepu is undergoing “preventive checks” at hospital, amid reports the Zambian had collapsed from a suspected heart attack.

The Seagulls appointed Mwepu as their Under-9 academy manager in December, two months after he was forced to retire from professional football at age 24 due to a heart condition.

The club issued a statement on Sunday ‘in response to media reports’, which claimed that Mwepu had been rushed to hospital following a collapse.

It read: ‘The club can provide the following update on Enock Mwepu, in response to media reports.

‘Enock was unwell in Zambia and is currently undergoing preventative checks.

‘Our medical team is in communication with the hospital to help if necessary.

‘The club would like to thank the many supporters for their messages and support. Neither the club nor Enock wish to comment further at this time.

Mwepu made 27 appearances for Brighton after joining the club from Red Bull Salzburg for around £18m in July 2021.

The former Zambian footballer took over as the new manager of Brighton's Under-9 academy in December.
