A vacationer is facing $15,000 in medical bills after breaking her leg in three places and sustaining serious head injuries when she crashed a moped into a bus.
Victorian tourist Bridget Harvey was driving on Magnetic Island, near Townsville in north Queensland, last month when she lost control of her car on a winding uphill road.
“I lost control on a bend and collided head-on with an oncoming bus,” she said in a GoFundMe appeal.
‘I was knocked unconscious and was badly injured.’
The June 7 crash broke and twisted her left leg in three places, sending her to a hospital 2,500 kilometers from her home with a pole and large screws.
The 33-year-old woman suffered a concussion and fractured her elbow, eye socket, nasal cavity and base of skull.
“I was lucky that there were two doctors from the hospital on the bus I crashed in and they were able to help me right away,” she said.
Her injuries were so serious that she had to be airlifted to Townsville University Hospital while she was on holiday with her boyfriend Anthony Main.

Ms Harvey, who lives in Ballarat, northwest of Melbourne, is not covered by the Transport Accident Commission because it only provides financial support if an accident occurs in her home state of Victoria.
“There will be a lot of loss and a lot of income lost,” she said.
As a counselor and art therapist with a contract at a perinatal and parenting center, she also has no paid leave, making life extra difficult as she spends months in rehabilitation to cope with her broken bones and brain injury.
“I expect I’ll have to draw heavily on my savings for this. Fortunately, I’ve had good work lately, which should help me survive a setback like this,” she said.
Her GoFundMe campaign has so far raised $4,170 since it launched on June 13. Ms Harvey is hoping to raise $7,000 to help ease the burden on her family and boyfriend.

The money will go towards rehabilitation, crutches, housing, transport back to Victoria and medical bills.
“Thank you again so much for all the love and support. It helps me make the most of my physical therapy and therapies and stay positive about my recovery. I appreciate you all so much,” she said.
