This came after Simone spoke out about her work as an actress with Indian roots, admitting that she doesn’t feel compelled to represent her community, but that she ‘celebrates the community’.

The beauty rose to fame in 2022 when she played the feisty aristocrat Kate Sharma in Netflix’s costume drama Bridgerton.

Her character was born to Indian Tamil parents, but was changed to be from India as well. Throughout the season, references to South Asian culture were made, which was celebrated as a big step in diversity.

Appears on the cover of the May issue of Vogue IndiaSimone shared what it felt like to represent her community.

When asked if she felt pressure to represent Indians, she said, “Not really, because I’m an actor. I’m not going to travel far and wide to India to save the country.

“But when you look at and read the history of India and what its people have been through, it does feel heavy.”

Simone said it was “the best feeling” when other brown women told her how much it meant to them to see themselves represented on screen.

She continued, “Representing Indian women is such a joy. Ninety-nine percent of the people who recognize me and come up to me are women of color, and that’s the best feeling because they’re so excited for me.

‘They hug me and tell me how cool it is to see brown women on screen. It makes me feel safe and seen, and even though I’m on the streets of London, I suddenly don’t feel like I’m part of a minority community anymore.

“I know there can be pressure on women who represent their communities in the arts. Maybe one day I’ll do a project where it’s like, ‘I have to get this right.’ But for now, I can just feel happy and celebrate.”

Last month, Simone said her Bridgerton co-star Nicola Coughlan is fully focused on her work — and not on the body-shaming from online trolls.

She was asked about the gut feelings Nicola, 37, faces in her role as Penelope Featherington in the Netflix series.

Simone told reporters at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in Monaco in June that her co-star is doing well and has overcome the meanness.

“Yeah, the haters are gonna hate, and I think we can all relate to that, but I really don’t think she’s going to let it bother her,” Ashley said, according to People.

Simone said Nicola has “a strong and fruitful career and life ahead of her” and she has every confidence her colleague will continue to grow.

“I really believe in her, and so does the rest of the world,” Simone said. “I think Nicola is just fantastic.”
