A man is in a critical condition after falling into a hole and becoming buried in sand on a popular island north of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to Bribie Island shortly before 2pm on Saturday and were only able to reach the scene via the beach.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed paramedics were still treating the patient at the scene two hours later.

The man is in critical condition.

The RACQ Lifeflight helicopter and an emergency physician were deployed to provide assistance.

The man has since been taken to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in an active condition.

No other details are available at this early stage.

Bribie Island is the smallest and northernmost of the three large sand islands that form the coastline and protect the northern part of Moreton Bay.
