Important events

Preamble

Hello from Del Mar Race Course, 20 miles north of San Diego in Southern California: where “the grass meets the surf” and also where City of Troy will try to make history in the Breeders’ Cup Classic later this afternoon, in the middle of the nine-race main card of the 2024 Breeders’ Cup.

When the gates open at around 9.41pm GMT, we can expect the most intense and compelling two minutes of racing action this year, and perhaps for many years to come, as the Derby winner attempts to complete an unprecedented double with victory in America’s most prestigious and valuable breed of all ages.

Fifteen horses from Aidan O’Brien’s stable have attempted to win the Classic, but none have had the mix of pedigree, class and racing style that City Of Troy will bring to its first (and last) race on dirt today. Whether that will be enough to make 16e time happiness is a mystery, but Forever young, from Japan, and Ferocity, The great US-trained hope will be among the seasoned opponents looking to exploit any hesitation from the start.

City Of Troy’s run in the Classic was always going to be the focus of today’s events, but there are of course eight more races to think about, including four on the field where the European runners completed a 3-3 clean sweep had. Friday.

Bradsel And Big Evof Hollie Doyle and her husband, Tom Strikingon board, will leave the outdoor boxes for the Turf Sprint at 19.41 GMT respectively, while Romance of the Rebels And Emily Upjohn, with Frankie Dettori in the plate, headline the bet for the Grass at 21.01. And once the Classic is done and dusted, there’s still time to perform the Classic Filly & Mare Turf (22.25) and the MilesWhere remarkable speech, the winner of the 2,000 Guineas is expected to start as favourite.

It was a promising start for the Europeans on Friday, but there is still a lot of work to be done on Saturday before this can be considered a good weekend for the visitors. JapanHe will also look for a winner or two from the remaining runners in his unusually strong team before the meeting.

It’s going to be an exciting ride with no doubt one or three big surprises along the way, and the Breeders’ Cup action will get underway at 7pm GMT with the Foal & Mare Sprint. Once we’re underway the action will be brutal, but stay tuned for video previews of all nine races, live results, betting odds, post-race quotes and more.
