Breeana Robinson: Major twist in the case of a 21-year-old cheerleader’s death from a Surfer’s Paradise balcony – as the man accused of her murder’s bizarre name change is revealed

Prosecutors are expected to drop charges against a man charged with murder in the death of his cheerleader girlfriend who plunged from an 11th-floor balcony.

Jayden Daniel Moorea was charged with the murder of 21-year-old Breeana Robinson, who died on January 29, 2013.

But prosecutors have determined there are no reasonable prospects of a conviction against Moorea, formerly known as Dan Shearin.

The former cruise ship employee changed his name to Moorea, after a French Polynesian island and his favorite cruise ship destination.

“The Crown has reviewed all of the admissible evidence and determined that there are no reasonable prospects of a conviction in this case,” a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service told AAP in a statement.

The case was scheduled to last two weeks from November 13, with Moorea facing one charge of malicious murder and damaging evidence.

The charges are expected to be dropped when the case is referred to the Brisbane Supreme Court for hearing on Wednesday.

Moorea denied murdering Ms Robinson but was charged with her murder in January 2019 after biomechanics experts concluded she had been thrown from the balcony of the luxury Gold Coast apartment.

Mrs Robinson’s aunt, Janine Mackney, fought to clear her niece’s name before charges were filed after it was initially claimed she had committed suicide.

“I knew it from the first moment,” she said at the time.

“She would never have left us.”
