Brazil man dies after shocking video shows ‘wife setting him on fire in the middle of a store before watching him run out in flames’

A man has died after his wife allegedly flew into a jealous rage and set him on fire at a fish market she owns in Brazil.

50-year-old André Chapeta died on Friday from injuries sustained after his wife doused him with a flammable liquid.

The incident took place on Monday in a store in Rio de Janeiro when Ana María Paixaõ saw Chapeta sitting at a table.

A surveillance camera showed Paixaõ walking past the counter and opening a bottle before pouring it over his body.

The woman allegedly lit a lighter and immediately set him on fire.

Chapeta as he was covered in flames and ran into the fish market pantry.

He was rushed to Getúlio Vargas Hospital, where he was treated for burns to 92 percent of his body before succumbing to his injuries on Friday.

Paixaõ was arrested by police on Thursday morning but released overnight after a judge failed to sign an arrest warrant.

Civilian police chief Flávio Ferreira told Brazilian news channel G1 that he believes the incident was motivated by the woman's jealousy of her husband.

He told the channel R7 that the couple's 30-year relationship was reportedly marked by bouts of domestic violence.

Paixaõ told investigators she was beaten before setting Chapeta on fire and responded in self-defense, a claim they rejected.

“What she says is not what the image shows. The image shows the victim sitting in a chair. She arrives cool, throws the liquid and sets it on fire,” Ferreira said.

'She was not in a vulnerable situation at that time, she was not in a situation where she would be directly attacked.

“On the contrary, as I said, he was sitting and posed no threat to her physical integrity at the time.”
