A child star famed for asking his on-screen father why the Great Wall of China was built in an iconic Telstra ad has returned to the screen after a 17-years break.

Brandon Fraser, affectionately known as Dan in the 2005 TV advertisement, was famously told by his co-star that the Great Wall of China was built ‘to keep the rabbits out’.

At the end of the ad Dan was preparing to give a speech on China to his class, using the hastily developed – and incorrect – story about the wall’s function.

The hook to the ad was parents should get Telstra high-quality internet to avoid awkward research mistakes such as this.

Seventeen years on, and the round-faced school boy is almost unrecognisable as he plays the adult role in a similar advertisement for the same telecommunications giant.

In the new advertisement, Dan plays the role of uncle to an equally impressionable young man.

His nephew asks him why the Great Wall of China was built – to which he jokes he was once told it was to keep the rabbits out – before giving a more reliable answer.

But as his nephew continues to press for more answers on buildings such as the  pyramids, Dan’s answers become more and more creative.

‘That was for the views. Great views of Egypt from the top. It was known as the, ahh, Great Pyramid Scheme,’ he said.

But this time his nephew is armed with an iPad and accesses the information he needed using free wi-fi from a payphone.

‘Right, that’s okay Uncle Dan I found the answers I was looking for,’ the youngster said.

‘Love it,’ one woman wrote.

‘OMG it is the OG kid,’ exclaimed another.

‘So many memories, this was the best ad ever,’ said a third.
