Brad Fittler is berated by irate NSW fans for making a shocking mistake in State of Origin II after Tom Trbojevic was ruled out with a serious injury
Brad Fittler has taken a social media whiplash after making a questionable tactical decision in a match that could well determine his job status.
Fittler took his injury-stricken New South Wales team to Brisbane to salvage this year’s Origin series after losing Game One in Adelaide three weeks ago.
The position of the Blues coach has come into question this series, with his decision to choose Jarome Luai over Dally M winner Nicho Hynes drawing heavy criticism.
And when disaster struck in the opening stages of the game at Suncorp, with Tom Trbojevic suffering from a chest problem, Fittler’s reaction stunned fans.
He opted to put Damien Cook in the centres, despite the Rabbitohs star having little experience playing in the position and possessing the talented Cameron Murray – who played as a half throughout his schoolboy career.
Fans took to Twitter to quash the decision that could prove costly.
‘Cameron Murray has won games playing in the centers for Souths, is being courted by the Wallabies to play for them in the centre, and with his job on the line Brad Fittler opted instead for a dummy half of 178 cm to beat Val Holmes and Xavier jackets. “Incredible,” said one fan.
“Brad Fittler went into this game knowing that Damien Cook would stop a back injury if we had one instead of choosing Matt Burton,” said another. “Queensland’s defense was elite, but we’re making it so hard for ourselves.”
A third fan posted: ‘Cameron Murray played his entire rugby career as a schoolboy. But the brain-dead Freddy sends Damien Cook after it.’
A dejected fan added: ‘I’ve literally spent my whole life wishing NSW was good… Get fittler out, tedesco played his last origin series, why is Damien Cook playing the centre? I didn’t understand half the decisions.’
However, some saw the funny side.
He’s currently filing a missing persons report for Cameron Murray. I’ll get to the bottom of this guys.’
