Tragic new details emerge about the baby’s mother found stabbed to death in a Sydney home
- Boy, 3, reportedly stabbed to death
- Father, 45, in hospital with serious injuries
- The child’s mother died years before the incident
The mother of a three-year-old boy allegedly stabbed to death by his father had died several years before the tragic incident unfolded.
Police and paramedics found the toddler’s body in a unit in Riverwood next to his father, 45, who was critically injured on Wednesday.
Emergency services were called to the southwest Sydney property at 4pm following a call from a female relative of the father.
Police believe he may have stabbed his son before turning the knife on himself.
Doctors at St George Hospital performed emergency surgery on the man, who is now in stable condition under police guard.
According to police, the little boy’s mother died a few years ago, and the three-year-old was said to have lived with his father.

Superintendent Sheridan Waldau (pictured) said it was a very ‘traumatic’ task for police to attend and assistance was offered to the officers involved
Detectives will investigate the “traumatic” incident as possible domestic violence.
The partner of the man, who was not at the scene, is talking to the police.
“This is, of course, a horrific incident. Any incident involving a small child is always a tragic one and our condolences go out to the child’s extended family,” said Superintendent Sheridan Waldau.
“Unfortunately, the police are constantly present at incidents of domestic violence, we are present at 140,000 incidents every year and unfortunately some of them end in murders.
“It’s one of the jobs that we always hate as a police force.”
Commander Waldau said it was a very “traumatic” task for police to be present and help was offered to the officers involved.
She added that police have not yet spoken to the man at length as he recovers from his surgery and have only had “very limited interactions with him.”
Some of the boy’s relatives came to the scene and were “very upset” by the incident. Some of them were so distressed that they reportedly had to be treated by paramedics.

Footage from the scene shows dozens of uniformed and plainclothes officers and paramedics entering the unit as shocked onlookers lined the doorstep.
A crime scene has been cordoned off and homicide officers are investigating.
