A toddler is fighting for his life after being pulled from a backyard pool just days before Christmas.

Emergency services rushed to the Moorebank home in Sydney’s south-west shortly after 6.30pm on Tuesday after a three-year-old boy was found unconscious in the water.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the child at the scene for some time before he was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital.

NSW Police initially reported the boy had died but have since confirmed he is in a critical condition in hospital.

Footage from the scene showed ambulances and police vehicles lined up on either side of the street.

The boy was surrounded by paramedics as he was carried from the house into an ambulance.

Several distressed family members were seen speaking to officers and paramedics as the boy was rushed to hospital.

A child’s life jacket was seen abandoned at the backyard pool.

“We were in the backyard and we heard a lot of screaming,” neighbor Valeria said.

“I did shout, ‘Is everything okay?’ because they were partying.

“I thought maybe someone had thrown someone into the pool, but then we heard a lot of screaming.”

Several other neighbors also heard the screams from the house and rushed to help.

“We went there to check and apparently a little boy fell into the pool and they were trying to revive him,” Valeria said.

“The neighbor went in to try to resuscitate the boy while the ambulance arrived.”

NSW Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

The incident is not considered suspicious.

The near-drowning occurred just hours after a man drowned on a beach at Catherine Hill Bay in NSW’s Lake Macquarie region.

Lifeguards and paramedics provided CPR to the man, 55, who was pulled from the water but could not be revived.
