Boy George says being jailed with Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil made him realise their relationship was ‘a tragedy waiting to happen’

Boy George has said the time he spent with Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil made him realize their relationship was “a tragedy waiting to happen.”

The 62-year-old Culture Club singer was sentenced to four months in prison in 2009 for chaining a male escort to a radiator and beating him with a metal chain.

At the same time, Blake was serving a 27-month prison sentence for his part in an attack on a cafe owner and an attempt to cover up the crime with bribes.

In his new memoir Karma: My Autobiography, George revealed that he and Blake would chat over coffee in his cell.

He wrote: “(Blake) played me (Amy’s) version of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

“Blake had that Sid Vicious vibe about him and I could see why Amy fell for him… they were star-crossed lovers, a tragedy waiting to happen.”

Amy, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 aged 27, married Blake in May 2007 and was arrested in November that year before being jailed.

Judge David Radford said at Blake’s hearing that he admitted to being high on cocaine and alcohol when he and his friend Michael Brown attacked pub manager James King outside the Macbeth pub in London during a bar fight in June 2007. They then offered James $400,000 to keep quiet about it.

George – born George O’Dowd – was convicted of assault and false imprisonment in December 2008, for an incident that occurred in April the previous year.

Snaresbrook Crown Court, London, heard that the singer handcuffed Norwegian Audun to a wall fixture and then beat him with a metal chain.

Audun had visited George to model during a photography session, and George was sentenced to 15 months in prison on January 16, 2009.

He was initially sent to HM Prison Pentonville in London, before being transferred to HM Prison Highpoint North in Suffolk.

George was released early on May 11, 2009 after four months, but was imposed a strict curfew and had to wear an ankle monitor for the remainder of his sentence.

Elsewhere in his memoir, George emphasized that Madonna is “too full of herself.”

The singer – who insisted that “every gay man loves Madonna and there’s no one gayer than me” – has reflected on several less-than-positive encounters with the Queen of Pop over the years.

He insisted that her unfavorable memories of the first time they crossed paths could not have happened as she remembered.

In his memoirs, he said that while Madonna remembers him “from head to toe in Westwood,” he wore exclusively Sue Clowes at the time.

Reflecting on a later meeting in New York City, George continued, “Madonna arrived with Sean Penn and pretended not to see me.

‘Madonna is everything it says on the tin, but she adds new ingredients every day. I’m sure she’s too full of herself to even mention me.

“She once said, ‘Boy George was mean to me in the 1980s and he’s still mean.’ To be honest, I didn’t really get the chance.’
