Two 15-year-olds have been charged with the murder of 16-year-old Brianna Ghey, who was found stabbed to death in a park in Warrington on Saturday.
A 15-year-old girl, from Warrington, and a 15-year-old boy, from Leigh, were charged this morning in the ‘targeted attack’ which left the schoolgirl with multiple stab wounds.
Yesterday, Cheshire Police confirmed that police investigating the murder had been granted a 30-hour extension to question the two suspects.
The officers also confirmed that they were pursuing “all lines of investigation, even if it was a hate crime.”
The trans schoolgirl, described as ‘fearless’ by her devastated family, was found with serious injuries from multiple stab wounds in Warrington Park and sadly died shortly afterwards.
Brianna Ghey, 16, was stabbed to death in broad daylight in a Warrington park on Saturday.
Brianna was described by her family as “strong, fearless and unique”.
Crowds gathered outside St George’s Hall in Liverpool to hold a vigil for Brianna Ghey last night.
Police previously confirmed that his murder was thought to be a “targeted attack”.
A series of vigils were held in Warrington and Bristol on Tuesday night in memory of the teenager, whose family is from Birchwood, Cheshire.
Many members of the LGBT+ community turned out to mourn the loss of Brianna, many carrying Pride and transgender flags and holding signs such as ‘Rest in Power’ and ‘Rest in Love’.
The Warrington vigil was organized by Brianna’s friends to remember her and show their support, just hours after police said they could not rule out her murder as a hate crime.
Crowds also gathered in Bristol city center to remember Brianna just days after her death.
Mourners on College Green in the city played music and posted photos of the 16-year-old at the vigil.
Vigils organized by members of the transgender community will also take place in cities including London, Glasgow, Leeds and Belfast in the coming days.
Brianna’s death has caused great grief to family and friends.
In a tribute issued after Brianna’s death on behalf of her family, they said the teen was a “much loved daughter, granddaughter and little sister.”
The statement continued: “She was a larger-than-life character who would leave a lasting impression on all who met her.”
‘Brianna was beautiful, witty and hilarious. Brianna was strong, fearless, and unique.
Brianna’s friends are said to be “distraught” by her death, with a father telling MailOnline his daughter was traumatised.
Dozens of wreaths have been placed at the entrance to the park where Brianna died.
Many of the vigil attendees brought banners with messages such as ‘Rest in love’.
Many also attended a candlelight vigil in Bristol to mourn the death of the transgender teen.
“The loss of his young life has left a huge hole in our family, and we know the teachers and their friends who were involved in his life will feel the same way.”
It had previously been revealed that the student had allegedly been harassed by a gang of bullies at her school for being trans, and that her father had complained about it.
Brianna was found by members of the public as she lay injured on a path in Linear Park, Culcheth, at around 3:13pm, and tragically died a short time later.
Police yesterday said they were given a 30-hour extension to continue questioning the two teenagers arrested on suspicion of his murder.
In recent days, devastated classmates and classmates from Birchwood Community High School have been seen laying flowers and tributes near where she was found.
A police officer stands next to floral tributes at the entrance to Linear Park, where 16-year-old Brianna Ghey was found.
It is believed that in the past she had been attacked by a gang of schoolchildren, had her backpack thrown downstairs in a move called ‘seat belting’ and had bottles thrown at her.
There is no suggestion that these events are connected to his murder at this stage.
Damian Harry, whose 15-year-old daughter was in Brianna’s class and a friend of hers, told MailOnline his daughter was “distraught” over her loss.
‘My daughter is distraught over Brianna’s death. She is very upset and has been vomiting from the trauma.
Emma Mills, the school’s principal, said Sun the Birchwood community is ‘shocked and truly devastated’ by Brianna’s death.
“It is understandable that this is a very difficult and distressing time for many and we will do everything we can to support our students and the school community at large,” said Ms. Mills.
MailOnline has contacted his school for comment.
