Boy aged 11 dead after freak cricket accident as police launch investigation

An 11-year-old boy has died after being hit in the groin by a cricket ball while practicing.

The victim, named by news.com.au as Shaurya Kalidas Khandve, died after leaving the Jagad Guru Sports Academy in Pune, India, earlier this month.

He was hit in the groin after bowling a ball, and the freak accident was caught on camera.

The footage shows the youngster, wearing a dark red T-shirt, taking a run-up and bowling the ball, which is quickly shot back to him.

The ball hits him in the groin area and he immediately doubles up.

He falls to the ground, gets up and collapses again moments later.

Several friends check on the boy, who is now motionless, before administering CPR and seeking medical attention.

He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sachin Dhamane, a police spokesperson, confirmed that an investigation into the incident has been launched.

Officers are awaiting autopsy results and have interviewed witnesses to the incident.

Known as Shambhu to his friends, Shaurya was a sports fanatic who refrained from becoming a professional wrestler.

The Pune Airport Police Station has registered his death as an accident.
