A two-year-old boy shot his pregnant mother in the back with a gun he found in her bedside table, killing her and her unborn child.

Police in Norwalk, Ohio rushed to the crime scene on June 16 after a frantic call from the mother, Laura Ilg, 31, shortly after she was shot in the back.

Her Navy husband Alek, 28, who was on duty at the time, also called dispatchers and told them he “got a call from his wife” who was “yelling something about my son and to call 911,” the spokesman said. Police.

Ilg was rushed to nearby Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where surgeons performed an emergency C-section, but they were unable to save the baby. Ilg was tragically pronounced dead about three hours later.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Laura’s husband Alek wrote on social media: “There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is and always will be the love of my life.’

Officers arrived at the house and forced their way in through the locked front door, where they found Ilg and her son upstairs in the master bedroom.

She said the room is locked most of the time and baby gates are placed all over the house, but her son bypassed the gates and started playing with the gun while she was doing laundry.

At Ilg’s request, the 2-year-old was taken from the bedroom and paramedics then performed desperate life-saving procedures.

She was said to be “fully conscious” and gave a “full account of the events that transpired,” explaining that she was 33 weeks pregnant

An online obituary for the mother says she “enjoyed going to church and spending time with her family.” She met her husband, Alek, while in the Marines and married on November 23, 2018.”

“She always wanted to be a mother and wife… She was an avid reader and especially loved Harry Potter, crafts, loved board games and was a kid at heart,” the tribute added.

A search of the house revealed the gun, along with a shell casing, while the pistol’s magazine was filled with another 12 rounds, police said.

Investigators also found two more firearms in the home, a 12-gauge shotgun in the bedroom closet and an airsoft rifle in the computer room closet.

The Norwalk Police Department’s detective agency, which executed a search warrant, says it found a number of child safety features in the home, including gates on nearly all doorways and child locks on drawers.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and no charges have yet been filed.
