An 11-year-old judo star was burned alive after being ‘doused in petrol’ and locked in a shed set on fire by ‘envious’ older children.

Albert Umbetyarov was trapped in a barn in the forest in Moscow’s Dubovaya Roschcha region after an argument on Friday, Russian investigative authorities confirmed.

A witness told Argumenti that assailants had “used bats to knock him almost unconscious” before they “dipped him in petrol” and locked him in a shed which they set on fire.

The attackers were reportedly aged between 13 and 15 and the horror was captured on camera by a group of girls who allegedly uploaded the footage and streamed it online.

Another witness said that Albert was attacked “out of envy” as a successful judo athlete who “did better than them.”

An eyewitness to the fire spoke to local media about the gruesome scene in the Moscow region

A local resident told the media after the attack that “there was fighting… one of the younger children who witnessed it said the victim was beaten to his knees so that he couldn’t run or even walk.”

One of the boys in the group ran away when the older kids attacked Albert.

Younger children, ages six and seven, playing nearby allegedly then ran to adults to get help.

The father of one of his friends said his son had left the scene before the horror and later returned to find Albert burned to death.

“At 7 p.m., he called me in tears,” said the father, Alexey. ‘He told me, ‘My friend burned to death in the barn’. I was there. I saw the flames. By then there was no one left to save.’

He said men had arrived with shovels to try and get through the blaze to save the child, but they were too late.

The boy’s judo coach, Alexander Tvanba, said Albert was “smart and very peaceful, he wouldn’t hurt a fly.” He worked very hard and never had any problems. He has won several competitions.’

He said he thought Albert would have been unconscious, and said he would have been strong enough to fight his way out if awake.

The Russian Commission of Inquiry said: “On May 19, 2023, during an argument, children locked a boy in a shed, locked the shed from the outside and nailed the door shut.

Then a fire broke out. According to preliminary findings, [the fire started] inside the barn. Children could not open the door and asked for help.

“When help arrived, the boy’s body was found in the burnt down shed.”

The commission’s head, Alexander Bastrykin, said this month that a “general rise in crime is underway” in Russia.

“We see a trend of serious and particularly serious crimes being committed by children.”

He also highlighted “an increasing trend of extremist crimes committed by youth” with a “sharp increase” in 2022 and 2023 “after the start of the special military operation” in Ukraine.
