If the main events on the Newcastle boxing card on Saturday are even half as entertaining as the antics leading up to it, punters will be in for a great show.

The official weigh-ins were held today for the Super Saturday boxing festival to be held at the Newcastle Entertainment Center tomorrow night.

The event will feature 20 fights staged over 10 hours, including the main event between Sam Eggington and Dennis Hogan for the IBO Light Middleweight World Title.

Foley helps himself to a big piece of birthday cake after calling Minto a ‘party pooper’

Minto, dressed in underwear with his wife’s picture on it, was quite upset by the birthday stunt

However, it was the antics of the undercard fighters that grabbed all the attention in the run-up.

It started with New South Wales boxer Blake ‘The Machine’ Minto taking the stage in sweatpants with his wife’s picture prominent on his behind.

That was weird enough, but Minto [pictured with his wife below] was ambushed.

The local hope is celebrating his 30th birthday on Saturday and his Irish opponent Darragh Foley was waiting for him with a celebratory cake.

“Happy Birthday…” Foley sang as he tried to wrap his arm around his opponent.

Minto didn’t feel like it and tried to start the fireworks early before storming off the stage in frustration, which was hilarious with the image of his wife on his underwear.

“You call that a party pooper,” Foley said.

‘It’s his birthday, look here, look at the hassle where I have to go.

‘I’ll take his cake. Hey Blake, this was for you mate. Come back on stage and share a slice of cake.”

Foley had also offered Minto a ticket after the Aussie said he would donate half of his winnings to a mental health charity.

“I watched a video and he says if he knocks me out, he’ll be really nice and spend half of it on mental health,” Foley said.

‘Something that will never, ever happen. So I wanted to compare it by buying him a lottery ticket.

Besides, it’s his birthday too. It’s not every day that you are 30 years old. I wanted to give him an early birthday present.

“I’m going to give him his birthday bashing on Saturday, you can be sure of that. But I wanted to give him an early birthday present. That’s how it came about. He has as much chance as winning the lottery.”

Dryden is okay with wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask, but thinks Nikita Tszy is ‘another dude’

Tszyu poses for his fight with Dryden tomorrow night at the Newcastle Entertainment Center

Another feature of the fight on the map is local hopeful Nikita Tszyu, brother of Tim Tszyu and son of former champion Kostya Tszyu.

Nikita has admitted to enjoying a liver diet and also has a fetish for making other people bleed – which is all a bit weird for his opponent Darkon Dryden who likes to wear a Hannibal Lecter mask in the ring.

Dryden said Tszyu is “another guy.”

Tszyu himself admitted there had been some restless nights leading up to the fight, but he felt relaxed and ready to mess around.

“Now it’s time for fun,” Tszyu said.

“All the hard work has paid off. The stressful nights, the overthinking, that’s all in the back of your mind. Now it’s the easy part. It’s putting things into practice.’
