Box office hit Barbie is the biggest movie release for home entertainment

It was a huge success at the box office – and Barbie was also Britain's best-selling home entertainment title of 2023.

The film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, sold 700,000 copies on digital platforms or on rental and purchased discs.

And British consumers spent £200 a minute on the film.

The success of the summer blockbuster, directed by American filmmaker Greta Gerwig, has helped boost the value of the UK home entertainment sector to £4.9 billion, up 10.6 percent from 2022.

Today's figures – released by the British Association for Screen Entertainment and the Official Charts Company – measure individual purchases on disc and digital, to rent, buy or own in Britain.

The second and third biggest movies for home viewers were John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros Movie.
